George Eugene Smith

Birth: about 1851, Hamburg, Erie Co, NY

Death: 13 Nov 1930, Miami, Miami-Dade Co, FL

Father: George A. Schmitt
Mother: Sophronia Wheelock

Spouse: Theresa Lawler
Marriage: 23 Sep 1877, Denver, CO

Notes:

He was called Eugene Schmitt in the 1865 NY census. He was listed in his father's probate records, dated 28 Apr 1883, as George E. Schmitt of Denver, Colorado. He was listed in his uncle Homer Wheelock's probate records, dated 5 Feb 1892, as Eugene Schmitt, of Denver.

He called himself George E. Smith in the census records, except for the 1920 census, in which he is listed as Eugene Smith.

He was a bookkeeper and accountant. He had moved to Denver, Colorado, by 1877, when he married Theresa Lawler there. Per obituaries and Denver directory, they remained in Denver until about 1827, when they moved to Miami, Florida, where both remained for the rest of their lives.

Per obit, George was survived by his widow, Mrs. Teresa Smith of Miami, a son, Harold E. Smith of Denver, a daughter, Mrs. E. Fox, of Miami, and a granson, Eugene S. Huges, of Miami.1

His death certificate says he was born 19 July 1847 in Hamburg, New York, son of George E. [sic] Smith. Besides the middle initial of his father, the birth date is also incorrect. His parents didn't marry until 1849, and on 8 Aug 1850, when George A. and Sophiah Smith were enumerated in the U.S. census in Hamburg, there were no children in the household

Research Notes:

George E. Smith married Theresa Lawler in Denver, Colorado, 23 Sep 1877.2

George E. Smith, book keeper, 28, born New York, is enumerated in the 1880 census living in Denver, Arapahoe County, Colorado, father born in Germany, mother in Ireland. He was married to Florence Smith, 19, who was born in Ireland, parents born in Ireland. They had a 1 year old daughter, Annie Smith, born in Colorado. Also in the household was Mary Lawler, 75, born Ireland, possibly Theresa's grandmother, or relative. Florence Smith must have been Theresa - perhaps a mistake by the census taker, or an alternative name for Theresa.

In 1900, George E. Smith, book keeper, age 49, born July 1850 in New York, was living in Denver, with his wife, Theresa L. Smith, 39, born Ireland. They were married about 1878. His parents were both born in Germany. Her parents were both born in Ireland. Their niece, Mildred Culbert, 20, born Jan 1880 in Colorado, was also living in the household. She could be the Mildred Anna Culbert, who married 6 Oct 1909 in Seattle, Washington, Frank E. Groppenbacher. She was the daughter of Wm. C. and Mary Culbert.3

In 1910, George E. Smith, accountant, 59, born about 1851 in New York, mother born New York, father Germany, was living in Denver with his wife, Theresa L. Smith, 49, born Ireland, parents both born in Ireland.

In 1920, Eugene Smith, 69, and his wife, Theresa, 59, were living in Denver. Eugene was born about 1851 in New York, mother born in New York, father in Germany. No occupation listed. Theresa was born about 1861 in Ireland, parents both born in Ireland. She immigrated about 1880.

He was not found in the 1930 census.

George Eugene Smith died 13 Nov 1930 in Miama, married to Theresa L. Smith. Per death certificate, he was born 19 July 1847 in Hamburg, New York. He had been a resident of Miami for three years before his death.4 So George did not die in Colorado. He and Theresa moved to Miami circa 1927 or 1928, when they both dissappeared from the Denver City directory.

His death notice, which does not identify his parents, was published in the 14 Nov 1930 edition of The Miami News. He was survived by his widow, Mrs. Teresa Smith of Miama, a son, Harold E. Smith of Denver; a daughter, Mrs. E. Fox, of Miami, and a grandson, Eugene S. Hughes, Miami.1

In 1940, Theresa Smith, 80, widowed, born Colorado, lived in Miami, Florida, with Eugenia H. Fox, 60, daughter, born Colorado. Eugenia may also have gone by the name Annie. She may be the Annie E. Hughes, born June 1879 in Colorado, living in Denver with her husband, Amos B. Hughes. The two later got a divorce, and Eugenia Hughes married 26 July 1920 Herman C. Fox in Denver.5

A Theresa L. Smith, who came from Denver to Miami, Florida, circa 1929, died 29 Jan 1952 in Miami, after a long illness. She was survived by a daughter, Mrs. Eugenia H. Fox; a son, Harold E. Smith; and a grandson, Eugene S. Hughes, all of Miami.6

Regarding Harold E. Smith:

Harold E. Smith married Nettie E. Needham, 8 Oct 1911, in Denver.7

Harold Edward Smith, b. 12 Dec 1880 in Denver, Colorado, resided at 1325 Delaware Ave on 12 Sep 1918, when he registered for World War I draft. This is the same address his that George E. and Theresa Smith lived at in the 1920's. His wife was Nettie E. Smith.8

In 1920, Harold E. Smith, 40, born Colorado, manager, DC and H, was living in North Platte Ward 3, Lincoln, Nebraska, with Nettie E. Smith, 42, Mary Jane Smith, 20, a RIchard J Burros. His father was born in New York, mother in Ireland.

In 1930, he was living in Denver, 49, born Colorado, age 17 at first marriage (i.e. he married about 1898). His wife was Nettie E. Smith, 54, and daughter Marijane Smith, 30.

In 1940, Harold E. Smith was 58, born Colorado, living in Warren, Marion County, Indiana, inferred residence in 1935 was Miami, Florida. His wife was Nettie E. Smith, 64, daughter Maryane Smith, 40.

In 1950, Harold E. Smith was 68, born Colorado, widowed, living in Dade County, Florida, with Mary Jane Smith, 50, born Indiana.
